Unlocking Insights on Beta-Glucan Testing in Fungal Infections
We are pleased to announce our sponsored symposium at TIMM 2025, focusing on a key topic in infectious disease diagnostics: beta-glucan testing for invasive fungal infections.
Why This Matters:
Invasive fungal infection is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among patients with immunosuppression or immunodeficiency. In recent years, beta-D-glucan has emerged as a valuable biomarker for monitoring the risk of invasive fungal infection and enabling early diagnosis. This symposium will explore the practical use of beta-glucan testing, its diagnostic potential, and the latest scientific advancements in invasive fungal infection diagnostics.
Featured Speakers:
Dr. Oskar Ekelund (Region Kronoberg, Sweden)
Practical Experience in the Routine Use of the Beta-D-Glucan Test
Dr. Ekelund is a clinical microbiologist, serving as Director of Clinical Microbiology for Region Kronoberg and the National Reference Laboratory for AMR in Sweden. He has a particular interest in diagnostic and susceptibility tests for infectious diseases. His seminar, will provide an overview of practical experiences with the FUJIFILM Wako beta-glucan test, which can be performed on individual samples.

Dr. Anne Debourgogne (CHRU de Nancy, France)
Diagnostic Value of Beta-D-Glucan in Invasive Fungal Infections: Insights and Focus on Intra-Abdominal Candidiasis
Dr. Debourgogne is a professor and medical biologist at CHRU Nancy, Université de Lorraine, France. Her research focuses on various mycological topics, including the epidemiology of fungal infections and diagnostic approaches for fungal pathogens. Her seminar will explain her laboratory’s experience applying beta-D-glucan as a biomarker in the diagnosis of intra-abdominal candidiasis using peritoneal fluid and serum at the Nancy University Hospital Mycology Laboratory.

Prof. Katrien Lagrou (UZ Leuven, Belgium)
We are honored to welcome Prof. Lagrou as our chairperson. Prof. Lagrou is Head of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory at University Hospitals of Leuven, Belgium, Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) and coordinates the Belgian National Reference Center for Mycosis. At the level of the Belgian Society of Human and Animal Mycology, she served the board during 22 years including 7 years as president. Currently she serves the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) as chair of the Academy Committee after being General Secretary during 6-years. Professor Lagrou’s main interest is the diagnosis of fungal and viral infections in severely immunocompromised patients, focusing on invasive pulmonary aspergillosis.
