HCC Biomarker Turkey
First Evaluation of HCC biomarkers AFP-L3% and DCP in Turkey
At the 5th APASL Single Topic Conference in May 2009 in Istanbul, preliminary results of a study about the HCC biomarkers AFP-L3% and DCP conducted by Prof. Dr. A.K. Doekmeci and colleagues from the Department of Gastroenterology of the Ankara University School of Medicine were presented.
The authors investigated 89 patients with proven HCC and 29 with liver cirrhosis. AFP, AFP-L3% and DCP were measured with the LiBASys (Liquid-phase Binding Assay System) instrument in the reference lab “Ankalab” in Ankara. For all markers significant different values could be observed between the HCC and the cirrhosis group. In only 53% of the HCC patients AFP was elevated > 13 ng/ml. The determination of all markers resulted in an increased total diagnostic sensitivity of 72%, whereas 3 ng/ml was used as cutoff values for DCP and 10% for AFP-L3.
The biomarker status was correlated with clinical findings such as tumour diameter and number, extrahepatic metastasis, portal vein thrombosis and TNM staging. Only AFP-L3% and DCP correlated significantly with tumour size. DCP also correlated with TNM staging.
The authors concluded that the combination of all three markers provides a useful non-invasive method for the diagnosis of HCC.
